Jesus was about to give his first sermon. It was to be done in the synagogue, the forerunner of the modern churches of Christianity. They were gathering places. Prayer was offered. Scriptures were read and discussed. Actually, sometimes cussed and discussed. By that I mean different approaches would sometimes cause disagreements and even controversy. That’s what Jesus’ fisr sermon was going to do. An amazing and beautifully delivered message would be completely rejected because of human envy and resentment of spiritual authority. It’s been a constant problem of the church since its founding. It was no different in Jesus’ day. At least he teaches us here how to be “an artful dodger” when it comes to criticism.
